Lion-O et les ThunderCats - Tygra, Panthro, Cheetara, Wilykat et Wilykit - échappent de justesse à la destruction soudaine de leur monde natal, Thundera, pour s'écraser sur la planète mystérieuse et exotique de la Troisième Terre. Lion-O, le nouveau seigneur des ThunderCats, tente de diriger l'équipe alors qu'ils font de cette planète leur nouvelle maison. Une foule bizarre de créatures et de méchants se dressent sur leur chemin, y compris le diabolique Mumm-Ra, le méchant dirigeant de la Troisième Terre qui ne laissera rien, y compris les ThunderCats, arrêter son règne tyrannique sur la planète.
